Hiking the Shawnee National Forest

I am going to start hiking the Shawnee National Forest on a regular basis, anyone who is interested get ahold of me.  I think I am going to use geocaching as an excuse.

I think also that there is going to be some mapping of landmarks done by the local scouts.  I plan on being involved with that as best I can.  The plan is to hike the forests looking for signs and permanent landmarks for having pictures taken and gps coordinates recorded.  Compile the information into books and next time there is a missing person with a cell phone (read: people from more populated areas who don’t understand that without street lights the woods get really really dark at night) we can get the book out and figure out where they are by what landmarks they have passed.

Me and Shauna go geocaching almost every weekend. There is a cacher known as GEO JOE who has hidden many many excellent caches in Southern Illinois. The cool part about his caches is that they are located usually in places that you would never know about, but are usually astonishing. Oh and we’ve also managed to find every single GEO JOE cache we’ve attempted.

Yesterday we went to Cedar Creek which is near the RtoR trail over by Ozark. We only managed to go to to one of the 4 caches in the area because we went kind of late. We intend to go back soon and do the 6 mile hike from the parking area to the other caches, let me know if you want to go.
